The Reduce Lateral Separation and Reduced Longitudinal Separation trials have been suspended and replaced by Performance Based Communications and Surveillance (PCBS) criteria. ![]() To ensure the continuing safety and efficiency of ATM operations in the NAT HLA, performance based operations and monitoring protocols have been implemented. The provision of PBCS in the NAT High Level Airspace (HLA) applies RCP 240 and RSP 180 specifications to the application of 55.5 km (30 nm), 93km (50 nm) and 5 minute longitudinal separation minima and the application of a 42.6 km (23 nm) lateral separation minimum. New technologies and procedures including Performance Based Communication and Surveillance (PBCS) are being implemented in order to reduce the minimum lateral and longitudinal separation between aircraft, thus increasing NAT airspace capacity. The North Atlantic (NAT) airspace has become a capacity bottleneck and traffic continues to increase. These terms refer to communication and surveillance based on performance specifications applied to the provision of air traffic services. ![]() Performance Based Communications and Surveillance (PBCS) is the combination of the criteria of Performance Based Communication (PBC) and Performance Based Surveillance (PBS).
